Biodiversity -- the variety of life on Earth -- is key to human survival. But plants, animals, and microorganisms are disappearing at unprecedented rates. Lets all do something to prevent this decline & preserve our beautiful planet. Right now can start in your own backyard..
Above is some of what is planned for Epping! Behind the towers of the mega polis, nature & community hopefully will prevail.
When temperatures reach towards the 40's many species are in serious trouble. Seeking refuge in deep shaded moist areas you will often find them on the ground & near water sources leaving themselves very vulnerable. Animals Australia have provided 5 steps for you to follow to give your local wildlife a helping hand.
Brown Waterhole is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It is where Terrys Creek joins the Lane Cove River in the Lane Cove National Park & it’s a hot spot for wildlife. There is a bench & table there for you to take a break from your walk & take in the surroundings. Here is a collage of photographs taken by Jenny recently.
Terrys Creek embankments in the area of Vimiera & Forrester Park finally get the attention they need & thoroughly deserve. It has been a long time coming but should stand the test of time & ravages of stormwater surges. Thanks go to the natural areas of Ryde & Hornsby Councils.
Wonder down from the ridgetops into the gully/rainforest vegetation & you will notice a big drop in temperature. No need to worry about the privets here, the dense canopies providing the necessary shade to cool wildlife.
Have you ever wondered what you could do to help improve your local environment & the plight of native wildlife? A small commitment of a few hours per year could make a big difference. Presently there are several volunteer bushcare groups working to restore the bushland along Terry Creek. Why not join in to help them?
Looking forward to finding Grey Goshawk chicks this spring. Jenny spotted this nesting mother in TC recently.
These Eastern Rosella nestlings lost their home during land clearing. Thankfully the actions of the excavator operator with the cooperation of Wires volunteers, a handmade nestbox & dedicated parents patiently waiting their return, a happy outcome was finally achieved
Hornsby & Ryde Councils have joined forces to rehabilitate & restore a section of Terrys Creek which joins both Councils. Read more about the project in the Noticeboard section of this website. Congratulations to both Councils. who for the first time have joined forces to work cooperatively to achieve a positive outcome for this highly impacted area.
Byles Creek bushland adjoins Lane Cove National park in the Beecroft/Cheltenham area. I only discovered this area a few years back & was enthralled by its outstanding beauty & thriving biodiversity. Please click the link on the photograph to the story in todays sydney morning herald on why this precious area is under threat & the community pleas for the government to protect it.
This little guy was picked up by me a couple of years back trying to cross Essex Street Epping (near Bulkira Road). Eastern Long necked Turtles are usually sighted in the area during Summer. Look out for them lazing about along the creek - a good spot is under the pedestrian bridge linking Essex Street to Vimiera Road. Unfortunately, my first sighting of a Terrys Creek Turtle was a victim of roadkill. Please slow down & watch out for wildlife when driving along roads near bushland.

PLOVER BABY ON THE RUN A new Plover chick explores its territory. Found in open grass & parkland areas, they are extremely vulnerable to predation. Mother Plover however is always nearby & fiercely protective - their sharp spurs, a serious weapon.
Free bushwalk for Threatened Species Day on Monday 7 September at Terrys Creek. For more information click on link.
